Forest in a Glass — a workshop for children at the Ecological Kindergarten

Ecological Kindergarten, Wejherowo Workshops

A workshop for the children of the Ecological Kindergarten in Wejherowo: each child built their own forest in a glass, learning about soil layers, plants and how a small ecosystem works.

On 21 October 2022 I led the “Forest in a Glass” workshop for the children of the Ecological Kindergarten in Wejherowo. Each child built their own small ecosystem in a glass bowl — from a layer of coloured sand and drainage, through soil, to the plant, moss, pebbles and little decorations.

While we worked, we talked about botany and ecology: what a plant needs roots for and why the layers of substrate go in this particular order, how to water a forest in a glass and where to put it so the plant keeps growing. The children planted small palms and ivy, and then laid out a mossy forest floor around them.

In the photos: scooping soil with wooden spoons, planting, and the finished forests in a glass.
